Can I play Gothic 2 without Gothic1?
You do not necessarily need to have played Gothic to play Gothic II as there is no information you’d miss out on when playing the second part. However it is highly encouraged, as many of the characters you’ll meet will have some history in the valley and that will certainly enrich your game.

Risen is basically a polished Gothic game. Gothic 2, and 3 were heavily plagued with bugs and glitches to the point a lot of people gave up. Eventually they were patched up, but I never got far in them due to the issues I had. I actually beat Risen though, and I wouldn’t recommend the Gothic series.

Should I play risen 1?
As far as we know, you don’t need to play Risen 1. The story isn’t as strong as games like Mass effect (even though it is still very immersing). R1 is still a very good game, and it probably would be worth it to play as you’ll most likely enjoy it… if you like Gothic games.
Do I need to play risen 1 before 2?
Risen 1 has its moments. But the game became progressively worse in later chapters. I haven’t completed it because it became too tedious. If you do plan to play Risen 1, play it before Risen 2, as it will be very hard to come back to after the sheer awesomeness of Risen 2.
