Is it an action to doff a shield?

It takes an action to don and to doff a shield (See Pg 146 of the PHB). However, you can always drop your sword, cast your spell, and pick your sword back up with your interact with object free action.

Does a shield take a hand?

A shield is made from wood or metal and is carried in one hand. Wielding a shield increases your Armor Class by 2. You can benefit from only one shield at a time.

Is dropping a shield a free action?

No. In order to have a free hand, you must first remove the shield by Doffing it and spending the Action to do so. The shield is on, and you have no free hand, until an action is spent to remove it.

Do you hold a shield in your dominant hand?

You just need to position the shield to receive impacts. You don’t need that arm’s strength as much as you need an arm to create the largest impact against your opponent with your sword. So you’d use your dominant hand.

Clerics should be allowed to use their shields as casting focus as well as not require a free hand to cast spells that require material or somatic components yet the life cleric you get at the start can’t cast shield of faith on herself because the game is looking for a free hand.

When you wield the shield, you need to use 1 hand for it, and when you only just wear it your hand is free to do what you like (cast spells even). In short, it allows us to use versatile weapons with a shield easily and change our strategy during battle without taking the 1 action to don or doff the shield.

Do you need a round to doff a shield?

Per page 146, you need a round to ‘doff’ a shield. It’s intended to be a more difficult process than just dropping it — there’s probably some straps to extricate yourself from. Even if your DM allows you to just drop it, that still means that it’s on the ground, and you’ll need to pick it up at a later time.

Can You Drop a punch shield two handed?

The rules we have now say: While it will take a full action to drop a shield that is strapped to your arm, a simple punch shield can be easily dropped without taking a full action. This allows the character with a versatile weapon to drop a punch shield, change their grip on their versatile weapon, and attack 2 handed in the same action.

Can you use a shield after making an attack?

It’s not that easy. Donning or doffing a shield costs an action: see the table on Player’s Handbook page 146. Therefore most characters cannot don a shield after making an attack or doff the shield before the attack – they need a second action to do one of these, and two extra actions to do both.
