With the rules as written in the PHB, no. It does not seem like you can drop a weapon/item when it is not your turn. But as with most questions of this nature, it kind of depends on the DM. On your turn, you can Move, Take an Action, take a Bonus Action and sometimes make a free action.
Does dropping a shield count as an action?
Mechanically no; thematically yes. Donning a shield grants a bonus to AC and occupies the hand. Of course, a player can narrate that their character “lets go” of a donned shield – but it has no mechanical impact. The shield remains donned (and the effects persist) until an action is spent to Doff the shield.
Are there Bucklers in 5E?
Here is a variation based on how I think buckler should work in D&D 5th Edition. A buckler shield is a small shield held in one hand or strapped onto the user’s forearm. Heavy armor users do not receive an AC bonus as heavy armor already includes heavy gauntlets and vambraces.
Can You Drop a weapon with no action?
Dropping something requires no action at all, not even your free object interaction. So you can drop your weapon, use your free object interaction to draw a different weapon, and attack with that weapon on a single turn.
How does dropping a weapon count as an interaction?
Basically, a shield that you can use like dancing sword (does causing it to dance take a bonus action?) which will still protect you but allow your hand to be free. As per the PHB, and Jeremy Crawford, dropping a weapon does not count as an interaction.
What happens when you drop a weapon in RuneScape?
Wrong, you don’t have to wait until next turn to pick it up. You can pick it up as your free object interaction for the turn. If you pick it up you need war caster to cast counterspell, absorb elements, and shield. It’s free to drop, and takes an interaction to draw/stow/interact.
What happens when you switch weapons in D & D?
However, switching weapons in the middle of combat (or dropping your current weapon and drawing a new one) is going to cost at least a bonus action. You’ve already used your free action to drop or sheathe your “old” weapon.
