You can use eldtrich blast with hex curse so no it’s not required. You can play pretty successful Hexblade without Pact of the Blade if your DM allows you to use Greenflame Blade or Booming Blade cantrips. Otherwise, it’s giving way too much just to gain ritual casting and expanded spell lists or imp.
How pact of the Blade works?
The warlock’s Pact of the Blade feature (PH, 107–8) lets you create a melee weapon out of nothing. Once the bond is formed, the magic weapon appears whenever you call your pact weapon to you, and the intent is that you can’t change the magic weapon’s form when it appears.

You can then treat it the same way as any other weapon you summon with this feature. At a base level, this ability is pretty great.
Can a Warlock dual wield?
A dual wielding Blade Warlock would need significant investment to work. You’d need to dip a level of Fighter for the Fighting Style, take the Warcaster feat so you can cast with both hands occupied, and get your DM to authorize a custom invocation for double pact blades.

This sentence clearly states that it applies to the pact weapon no matter the weapon’s type which should include two handed, heavy or any other type of pact weapon and would include ranged weapons (if you have the improved pact weapon invocation).
