Does PSO work on Wii?
— Plug an ethernet cable into your Wii, boot up PSO via DEVO, press start, go to Options/Network Option/Provider Option/Yes. Have the memory card with your characters that you want to play in Slot A and select Yes to the first and second prompt (you can move that cursor around with your GC controller’s analog stick).
Is PSO worth playing?
It is a timesink for sure (definitely with the solo, offline approach) but if you got the time and interest, yeah, check it out. It’s not a good enough game to play offline. I played it on the Dreamcast for 100+ hours (all offline), and then I played it on the original Xbox for like 200+ hours (mostly online).

Back then, was it sufficient to activate the game once, or would you have to subscribe to the service for as long as you wanted to play? (difference between online and offline mode?) (I assume you can’t play it on Xbox 360, as it is not listed in the List of Xbox games compatible with Xbox 360 .)

The reason why you need an Xbox Live account is because the whole serial code was not needed for Xbox it only required that you had Xbox live or an old account. You have to have a gamertag to play Xbox PSO, even offline.
