How many spells can a bard use?
The bard table has Collumns for spell slots as well as a column for spells known. So a first level bard knows 2 cantrips and 4 spells but only has 2 first level spell slots. When you go to level 2 your spells known increases to 5 (you learn a new spell) and get 1 more spell slot.
Are bards underpowered?
yes they will be weaker than sorcs and wizards. if you play them as a melee fighter yes they will be weaker than fighter, monks, rogues well pretty much all melee fighting classes. But no matter what subclass/college you go they will be strong if you play them as a bard.
