How many copper ores are there?
Altogether more than 600 copper minerals are known. Here are some of the better known ones. The most important one for today’s mining is chalcopyrite.
Why are copper ores running out?
The copper strip stays shiny because it is relatively unreactive – this makes it ideal for recycling. Whilst we shouldn’t run out, the demand for copper is growing and this may lead to shortages in the future until new deposits can be mined economically.
Do copper mines still exist?

In 2017 the United States produced 1.27 million metric tonnes of copper, worth $8 billion, making it the world’s fourth largest copper producer, after Chile, China, and Peru.

Who owns the most copper?
The largest reserves are located in Chile, which is also by far the world’s top copper producing country ahead of Peru and China. According to the US Geological Survey, around 20 million tonnes of copper were produced globally in 2020, a small decline compared to the previous year.
Who owns the largest copper mine in the world?
Minera Escondida, located in Antofagasta, Chile, is the world’s largest copper mine, producing almost 5% of the world’s supply of the metal. BHP manages the operation and holds a roughly 58% stake. Other investors include Rio Tinto PLC and Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp.
What is a copper rich ore?
These ores are a mixture of copper carbonate, sulfate, phosphate, and oxide minerals and secondary sulfide minerals, dominantly chalcocite but other minerals such as digenite can be important in some deposits. Often, the nature of the gangue is important, as clay-rich native copper ores prove difficult to liberate.
