Skyrim:The Rueful Axe. The Rueful Axe is a unique battleaxe. It is found in the possession of Sebastian Lort during the quest A Daedra’s Best Friend, and may be given to you as a reward from Clavicus Vile for the murder of Barbas.
Can the rueful axe be upgraded?
The axe can be upgraded with an Ebony Ingot and the Arcane Blacksmith perk. However, it does not benefit from any Smithing perks.
Is rueful axe good?
The Rueful Axe is NOT a special weapon, it has no overly magic powers, it is also not powerful. However, Clavicus tries to convince the player that the Axe IS special, saying that it’s “Very powerful”, but the truth is it’s nothing of the sort.
Can Barbas be killed?
Barbas is a useful follower to have in a fight since his attack is strong enough to kill many weaker enemies in one strike. He is also an effective decoy against more powerful enemies, for he cannot be killed during the course of the game.

Please I’m a serious collector and wouldn’t like to miss out. Well so does the goddam Rueful Axe. Its blades look like angel wings…….kinda. But I see what your all saying. Why the mask?
Can you keep the rueful axe in Oblivion?
You either kill Barbas (poor mutt) and keep the Rueful Axe. Hand the axe to Clavicus Vile and receive his true daedric artifact, viz. the Masque of Clavicus Vile. Important thing to note here is that only the Masque of Clavicus Vile counts towards the Oblivion Walker achievement.

I thought you could kill Barbas after receiving the mask, but he is a statue now. Did I miss my chance? In this particular quest, you can not get both items as reward. You either kill Barbas (poor mutt) and keep the Rueful Axe. Hand the axe to Clavicus Vile and receive his true daedric artifact, viz. the Masque of Clavicus Vile.

No, there’s no way to get both. The only quest allowing you to get both of an item is the hircine quest before the patch. I’d just get the Masque. yes, there is, via the slow time shout…
