The medusa has two distinctive features, Petrifying Gaze and Snake Hair. The latter is a simple melee attack that does some poison as well as piercing damage. Petrifying Gaze is more complicated and demands closer examination.
Can Medusa reverse petrification?
Usually when you have a creature that can do one thing, there is another who can undo it. Medusa is a greek goddess who turned you to stone. Asclepius could undo that.
Is petrifying gaze a magical effect?
So a petrification effect that is not stated to be magical in nature, like that of the Medusa would still work. Both the Basilisk, and the Medusa have the ability “Petrifying Gaze” but while the basilisk’s gaze is explicitly stated to be magical in nature, the Medusa’s gaze expressly is not.
What DND eats basilisks?
Basilisks subsist largely on berries, fish, small fowl, and carrion. They do not eat stone in this edition, so their petrification gaze is purely defensive.
What CR is a Basilisk?
Its melee attacks are slightly weaker. Its Rotting Gaze forces a character to make a similar CON saving throw with DC 12 or take 10 necrotic damage. Without the Gaze, I’d say the Basilisk have a CR 2 monster’s stats.
Can basilisk blood cure petrification?
In the Monster Manual, it states that basilisks have an enzyme in their digestive system that reverts petrified material to its original state for digestion, and that this is often used as a way to free those who have been petrified.
Can you reverse petrification?
Petrified is a condition, there are currently two spells that remove it. Greater Restoration as mentioned here, and Wish, the 9th level spell. Usually there are also consumables (potions/salves/oils) that will remove petrification, however we have not seen any of those yet (we’ll likely see them with the DMG though).
How does petrifying gaze work?
Petrifying Gaze: If a creature starts its turn within 30 ft. of the basilisk and the two of them can see each other, the basilisk can force the creature to make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw if the basilisk isn’t Incapacitated. On a failed save, the creature magically begins to turn to stone and is Restrained.
