Dragonborn (also known as Strixiki in Draconic; or Vayemniri, “Ash-Marked Ones”, in Tymantheran draconic) were a race of draconic creatures native to Abeir, Toril’s long-sundered twin.

From the PHB entry on dragonborn: Shaped by draconic gods or the dragons themselves, dragonborn originally hatched from dragon eggs as a unique race, combining the best features of dragons and humanoids. So the dragonborn as a race definitely originated from eggs.
What are Dragonborn?
Dragonborn are bipedal creatures, resembling a dragon in humanoid form. They typically stand almost 6½ feet tall and are strongly built, weighing over 300 pounds. Unlike true dragons, they do not have wings or a tail, although there are individual exceptions to this. Dragonborn eyes are various shades of red or gold.
