IMO all dark elixir should be spent on heroes. Even if you upgrade dark elixir units, using them when raiding/farming costs too much. The only exception is if you are using golems and witches when trophy hunting. At that trophy count your base would be constantly destroyed and your dark elixir would be raided anyways.
