Wizards need a spellbook to prepare spells (from the book), but not to cast. The book is not a component/material/focus/requirement of casting the spell.
What happens if a wizard loses their spellbook 5e?
They do gain access to additional spells by gaining levels, but so do other classes. But, the spellbook also creates a limit on the wizard’s power, and a danger to the use of that power: if a wizard loses his spellbook, then he’s basically stuck with only the spells he had prepared when the book was lost.
Can a wizard change spells?
Contrary to Sorcerers and similar, there’s no provision for a Wizard to “exchange” known spells, because he doesn’t lose them, they are always there (as long as he has his spellbook(s), at least).
What can a wizard do without a spellbook?
In the Preparing and Casting spells section, only preparing a new list of spells actually requires your spellbook. Casting just requires spell slots and a prepared list of spells, and regaining spell slots just requires a long rest. You can’t cast spells as rituals. You can’t use your Arcane Recovery feature.

You can cast a wizard spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and you have the spell in your spellbook. You don’t need to have the spell prepared. Now while the rules mentions a spellbook, they don’t actually state that you need to use it during the ritual casting. Just that the spell already needs to be inscribed in the spellbook.
Can you cast a spell without a spell book?
Yes, you can cast spells without your spellbook. And yes, your list of prepared spells will stay prepared until you prepare a new list. In the Preparing and Casting spells section, only preparing a new list of spells actually requires your spellbook.
How many spells can you add to Your Spell Book for free?
Each time you gain a wizard level, you can add two wizard spells of your choice to your spellbook for free. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots, as shown on the Wizard table. On your adventures, you might find other spells that you can add to your spellbook (see the “Your Spellbook” sidebar).
