How do you prevent TPK?
The fact is, changing around dice rolls is the quickest and easiest way to help players avoid a TPK. However, DMs who do this should employ the tactic sparingly and silently; fudging dice rolls is definitely not something players should feel free to do, nor can they with their dice rolls out in the open.

Make them harder to hit (bump their AC up 1 or 2 points), and give them double (or maybe ven 2.5) the hit points. Have a lot of them (most will die with one or two hits anyway, so it will probably also make the players feel epic as they are hacking their way through the dungeon).
