If the Dragonborn kills Grelod the Kind without ever consulting Aventus Aretino, the Dark Brotherhood will not immediately initiate contact. The Dark Brotherhood will then contact the Dragonborn. The Dragonborn does not have to talk to anyone prior to talking to Aventus.
How do you get the Dark Brotherhood to contact you?
To join, go to Windhelm, and walk round the streets until you hear about Aventus Aretino trying to contact the Dark Brotherhood. Head to the Aventus Residence – the easiest way to get there is to take the passage on the right before you enter the Palace of Kings – and lockpick your way into the easy Novice lock.
Can you join the Dark Brotherhood after Innocence Lost?
To get this quest you will have to sleep in a bed after you’ve finished “Innocence Lost”. You can still join the Brotherhood despite being attacked by one of their assassins. The only thing that really prevents you from joining the Brotherhood apart from cheating is the quest ” Destroy the Dark Brotherhood!
How long must I wait after Innocence Lost before the dark?
Sleeping for at least 8 hours is not necessary. 5 hours continued the quest. (PC) 1 hour continued the quest. (Xbox 360) 1 hour worked (PS3) Just keep wandering around a different town and waiting until the courier arrives, it’s been suggested this can take many days in game.
