Real ID is a voluntary, optional level of identity designed to help stay connected with real-life friends across all of Blizzard Battle.net. When two players mutually agree to become Real ID friends, they’ll have access to a number of additional features that will enrich the social gaming experience.

This was changed some years later to allow for “battle tag” friends. The people that are showing up with their real names in the battle.net desktop app are these older friends whom I set up real-ID friends with years ago. I currently have Real-ID disabled, but the full real name of these older real-ID friends is showing.
What’s the difference between a battle Tag and a name?
Blizzard’s answer to this issue was the implementation of Battle Tag, which is a name that you choose with a randomly generated number on it (ie: YourName#1993) which you can then give out to allow people to add you to their Battle.net friend’s list without exposing your email address to them.

How to remove a Real-ID friend in Battle.net?
I accidently added someone as a real id friend in battle net, and they accepted. Now we both want to remove the person from the list, so that the other person shows up with the username instead. How do I do this ? I can’t see anything on Blizzard’s FAQ There’s not a way to “downgrade” someone’s friend status.
