What is HD in DND?

Hit dice (singular hit die), abbreviated HD, are a rule in Dungeons & Dragons originally referring to the number of dice rolled to calculate how many hit points a character or monster begins play with.

Do hit dice replenish?

Important note- Hit dice do not fully recharge on a long rest. You gain half of your level back in hit dice on a long rest. So, our level 6 warlock above would restore 3 hit dice after resting bringing him back up to his max of 6.

Which one is the hit die?

A hit die is the die you roll to determine how much your total hit points increase each time you gain a level. So the size of the die affects how much HP you have, since each level you have a better chance of getting more HP. Classes that are supposed to be tough have a larger hit die, and so should have more HP.

How many hit dice after long rest?

At the end of a long rest you regain a number of hit dice equal to half of your character level (minimum 1). You only regain half of your hit dice on the long rest (one on level 1).

Can you spend hit dice to recover hit points?

Player characters can now “spend” hit dice to recover hit points during a short rest. For example, a level 5 barbarian with d12 hit dice and a Constitution modifier of +3 can roll to recover 1d12+3 hit points, and can do this a number of times equal to their barbarian level.

What should my hit dice be at Level 1?

To find health at Level 1 take the max roll for your hit dice (for a d10 that’s 10) and add your constitution modifier. For our level 1 Fighter with a constitution of 12 (+1), his starting hit points would be 11. When you level up things will begin to get more complicated. And it’s mostly because now you have a choice.

What happens if you halve Your Hit Dice Base?

For a Fighter with a Hit Dice base of d10, halving it would leave you with 5, plus one is 6. Therefore, d10 classes have an adjusted median of 6, easy! At level up you take that adjusted median and add your constitution modifier, which for our case is +1, so our Fighter would gain 7 health on a levelup.

How many hit dice does a 9th level fighter have?

A player character’s hit dice might not be equal to their level; a 9th level fighting-man has 9d6+3 hit points (nine hit dice with a 3 HP bonus), while a 9th level magic-user has 6d6+1. Greyhawk (Supplement 1) (1975) introduces variable hit dice by class, with the express purpose of strengthening fighters and weakening magic-users.
