After 4 pings you have narrowed it down to 300 ft and can spend the 1 minute moving the edge of the circle to find which edge is touching them (by moving back and forward a step in different directions). You will be able to work out which direction they are, and know they are 1 mi in that direction.
When to use primeval awareness in dungeons and Dragons?
