What is a proficiency bonus?
Simply put: the proficiency bonus in Dungeons and Dragons is a bonus added to skill checks, saving throws, or attacks for skills that a character is proficient in. At first glance, it might not be obvious how this bonus differs from the ability modifiers a character has.
How many levels do you need to be a multiclass spellcaster?

Can a Paladin get a proficiency bonus on a spell?
The proficiency bonus is only mentioned as a Spellcasting Bonus under ‘Magic Ability’ for Bards, Clerics, Druids, and Mages. Paladins and Rangers, (who only get access to spells later in their career), do not have it added on. Many spells specify that a target can make a saving throw to avoid some or all of a spell’s effects.
