Sicilian Defense
The Sicilian Defense is the most popular defense against white’s opening 1. e4 and is used extensively at top level play. It is a very aggressive defense and immediately stakes claim at the center, denying white the double pawns on e4 and d4.

Is e4 sharper than d4?
d4 is protected, e4 is not. That’s the main difference. White’s center is definitely stronger with d4 and c4 than in a typical open game, and play tends to be more strategic and a little slower. But don’t think d4 can’t be just as exciting or dangerous.
What are some unusual openings after 1.e4 g6?
Other unusual openings can be reached after 1.e4 g6. The Hippopotamus Defence is one such system. Another is the Norwegian Defence (also known as the North Sea Defence) which begins 1.e4 g6 2.d4 Nf6 3.e5 Nh5. (If White plays 4.g4, Black retreats the knight with 4…Ng7.
Why is 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 b6 so unpopular?
As opposed to e.g. a Dragon Sicilian development (diagram below), where the coordination of knight on c6 and bishop on g7 come with tempo as white has a number of targets on that long diagonal and black’s quickly finishing development and will be in time to either create space on the queenside or play the d5 advance.
Why is 1.e4 b6 not as popular as Sicilian mainlines?
As to why it’s not as popular as Sicilian mainlines, much similar to 1.b3 or 1…b6 openings, 1…c5 2…b6 is not a sound starting setup strategically, for the following summarised reasons: 2…b6 does not contribute to kingside development.
What’s the downside of playing 1…b6?
By playing 1…b6, Black prepares to fianchetto the queen’s bishop where it will participate in the battle for the centre. The downside of this plan is that White can occupy the centre with pawns and gain a spatial advantage.
