It is commonly recommended to hold off on multiclassing until you reach at least level 5 in your base class. In an ongoing campaign, when you can multiclass will be largely decided based on your DMs leveling structure.
When you multiclass do you start at level 1?
When Multiclassing, Start Taking Class Features from Level 1 of the New Class: Your new abilities start with the new class’s level 1 abilities, moving up for each level you take in that class.

You can only reach character level 20. With multiclassing every time you level up you can choose one of your classes and increase it’s class level by 1 or add a new class at class level 1. With this role, you have the option of gaining a level in a new class whenever you advance in levei, instead of gaining a level in your current class.
What’s the maximum save for a multiclass character?
Add the base save bonuses for each class together. If a skill is a class skill for any of a multiclass character’s classes, then character level determines a skill’s maximum rank. (The maximum rank for a class skill is 3 + character level.)
What happens when all characters are in the same class?
For a character whose levels are all in the same class, character level and class level are the same. A character gains hit points from each class as his or her class level increases, adding the new hit points to the previous total. Add the base attack bonuses acquired for each class to get the character’s base attack bonus.
Is there a limit to how many classes you can multiclass into?
If that’s true, and you can’t go beyond a total level of 20, then would it hurt to set a limit of 2 or three classes you can multiclass into that can be maxed out to level 20 each. I’m trying to avoid becoming over powered.
