When should players get rare magic items?

As a general rule of thumb, I tend to give my PCs magic weapons somewhere between levels 3 and 5. Magic armor tends to come a bit later, between 7 and 10. But various magic items can happen at any point. I like giving my players little gadgets all throughout the campaign, because it gives them something else to do.

How many magic items should a party have?

Xanathar’s Guide says that over 20 levels, a party will find “roughly one hundred items.” According to my calculations, the party should find 101.8 items – pretty damn close to 100. Of these, 75 will be minor items, and only 7 will be magic weapons.

What pet increases magic find?

The Daedalus axe, when used with a magic find pet, or a pet with a Lucky clover, boosts magic find, due to the axe’s ability. It is best to use a griffin pet with this. This enchantment acts similar to the Daedalus axe ability, copying pet stats.

Note that this is based upon the monsters’ chance to drop an item. If you find an item that gives 20% Better Chance of Getting a Magic Item, and a Monster has a 2% chance to drop a Magic Item, you will now have 2.4% chance of getting that Magic Item. So having 100% Magic Find does not guarantee a Unique/Rare/Set drops.

What happens when you have 100% magic find?

If you have 100% +MF, if an item dropped normally had a 10% chance to be magical, it will now have a 20% chance. You won’t get more items dropping, but the ones that do drop will be better items. More players in a game = more item drops, so you want to try and combine the +MF with a big MP game for the best results.
