In the Great Wheel cosmology, demiplanes were found in the Ethereal plane because they were formed from the swirling proto-matter that made up the Ethereal. The Demiplane of Shadow was the best known example.

What happens when you cast a demiplane spell?
When the spell ends, the door disappears, and any creatures or objects inside the demiplane remain trapped there, as the door also disappears from the other side. Each time you cast this spell, you can create a new demiplane, or have the shadowy door connect to a demiplane you created with a previous casting of this spell.
Is it possible to expand a demiplane?
Well, it says you can create more demiplanes in the plane of your choosing, but you can only connect to one demiplane at a time. The demiplanes that you have created doesn’t disappear like Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Mansion that is a conjured thing.
