How to Become Thane in Skyrim
- Whiterun. This is the main/first thane of the game.
- Morthal. Investigate the burnt house and complete its quests.
- Markarth. For the Thane of Markarth you’ll have to complete many quests of Jarl and Stweard, also the Civil War quests.
- Solitude.
- Falkreath.
- Riften.
- Windhelm.
- Dawnstar.
Can I be thane of Riften?
For Riften you must go to the Riften Fishery and look for a lady that has a Skooma addiction. Then, you must buy a house in Riften and you will be presented with the your title as thane.

To become a Thane again, the Dragonborn must assist five citizens of Whiterun and purchase Breezehome, (if this hasn’t already been done). Speak to Vignar after he is promoted to Jarl about becoming a Thane. He’ll award a Blade of Whiterun and grant them the title of Thane again.
How do I become Thane of Riften?
The jarl requires you to buy the house in town as well as completing a number of miscellaneous quests. Once this is achieved you can become Thane. In order to receive this quest you must first aid the current jarl, Laila Law-Giver or Maven Black-Briar, by dealing with the skooma trade in Riften.
