Vex
Once in Riften, simply ask around about the gem. Eventually, the Dragonborn will be directed to speak with Vex, a member of the Thieves’ Guild who reveals that the unusual gem is in fact a Stone of Barenziah, and that there are 24 of them in total.

Why are the VEX bad?
The reason of the vex cannot be fathomed because they have perspective the tower and guardians (us) cannot ever have, and it is implied they want to exist in a world where nothing can challenge them or become a threat to them and will never die and will always exist.
Where to find the 24 unusual gems in Skyrim?
Find the 24 gems to restore the Crown of Barenziah. Quest received upon finding the first “Unusual Gem”. Find one of the 24 ” Unusual Gems ” scattered throughout Skyrim. Become a full member of the Thieves Guild (if not one already). Have the gem appraised by Vex at The Ragged Flagon in Riften.
Is there a way to tell which stone of barenziah is found?
The stone in Wuunferth the unliving’s quarters may not be there after the quest Blood on the Ice. as of now, there is no known fix to this.
Where do you find the gems in Dungeons?
For gems found inside dungeons where you might be fighting NPCs – they can be knocked off their table, shelf, pedestal or whatever by spells, arrows, bodies running into them, walking over them etc. and sometimes fall into inaccessible locations like a deep furrow in the ground or underneath furniture.
What happens when you steal gems in Skyrim?
The gems that will be marked as stolen may say “steal” instead of “take” when acquiring them; in this case, they will still be marked as stolen and if you’re caught taking them, you will be reported.
