Closed last year. In 5e, the Monster Manual states that each kind of Metallic Dragon gains the Change Shape ability by the time it is Ancient or Adult. However, no such ability is ever mentioned for Chromatic Dragons. This has been the case in every edition of D&D, as well.

Its average damage over 3 rounds is about 68, with an attack bonus of +10 and a DC of 17, giving it an offensive CR of 10 or 11. Regardless, its CR comes out as around 16.

Can chromatic dragons shape change?
Chromatic dragons don’t have the shape shifting ability gold, silver, and *bronze* dragons have (and neither have copper and brass dragons). They have to use the appropriate spell (if they know it) or other means to change their form.

You can only speak if the creature can normally speak. When you transform, you choose whether your Equipment falls to the ground, merges into the new form, or is worn by it. Worn Equipment functions as normal. The DM determines whether it is practical for the new form to wear a piece of Equipment, based on the creature’s shape and size.
How are chromatic dragons different from other dragons?
The majority of chromatic dragons fall between the two extremes: A vague fondness exists between parents and offspring, but neither is likely to jump into action if the other needs help. They react to any intrusion with as much violence as they would if the invader were a stranger.
